File sharing has become so commonplace it's something we hardly think about. But with services like RapidShare you need to upload your file to them before sending a download link to your friend, which means you have to trust that company with your files. With FilePhile, once you register, you can transfer files directly to any other FilePhile user you know.

With traditional P2P, many users can be sourced to increase the speed of transfers but with FilePhile you must be online to transfer files, so in that sense it's limited. However, you gain security as your transfers are encrypted and never hosted on another server. You also have no limit on the size of file you transfer, and downloads/uploads recover without incident if they've been interrupted for some reason.

There is no search facility in FilePhile, so if you want to add someone to your buddy list you have to type or paste in their email address. This isn't a huge handicap, and highlights that this is not about anonymous downloading, but sharing files between people you know. It's easy to manage though and you don't need any technological knowledge. FilePhile also features a really basic secure chat function, which works perfectly well, but looks very old fashioned.

Speed is totally dependent on your connection speed, and if you don't want FilePhile to hog your bandwidth you can set a limit on both the up and download bitrates. Visually, FilePhile is nothing to write home about, but it's lightweight and simple. Files can be sent by browsing for them or simply dragging and dropping them onto your target email address.
